Harry Joyce vs. Hiwatt

Although many people believe that these are the same, there are some major differences in sound and design. Besides the fact that Hiwatt amps underwent many changes throughout their production years themselves, which changed the sound. Harry Joyce amps were actually the product of all the changes made. Originally Hiwatt amps came with .047mf coupling caps versus the Harry Joyce .022mf best known as the “Marshall Value”. This gave the amp slightly less bass, but this was compensated in the first stage by means of introducing a 150mf cathode bypass cap. Early Hiwatt amps on the other hand used a .047mf in the Brill input, and none in the Normal. Another change was made to wire the first preamp tube cathodes together, where the original resistors were 2.2K each now both cathodes were summed through a 1.5K resistor and a 150mf cap across. The second stage on Hiwatt amps used only half of V2. Harry Joyce amps use the whole tube by cascading the inputs of V2a, and V2b for more gain. The bias feed resistors changed from the 100K to 220K. This resulted in a more aggressive sound, and unlike the older Hiwatts that had two preamp to poweramp coupling caps (.047 mf one for two tubes along with two 22K resistors for the 100Watt version) the Harry Joyce doubled up in terms of having four .022 caps with four 22K resistors.The idea behind was to make the amp more stable, and balanced. Additionally the Harry Joyce amps had no bias adjuster, because according to Mr. Joyce the old Mullard EL 34′s were so consistent that it was not necessary. Nowadays it might be most important. Early Hiwatts came with the grids of the phase inverter V3 (12AT7!!) wired together to the cathode resistor of V4b through a 100K resistor. This design was later changed to a 220K resistor. This change gave the amp less responsiveness and sounded not as full. Power and output transformers changed from Partridge to a custom wound type, and the 100Volt output tap on the ohms selector got omitted.

Sugar Cone vs. SCHOLZ CLASSIC?

After 15 rounds punch for punch, note for note. The winner and still World Champion is? A (DRAW) whaaat? The judges came to this decision because they are both the exact same speaker! THE SCHOLZ CLASSIC is the only speaker designed by “GEORGE SCHOLZ”. There is absolutely NO new version of the “SCHOLZ CLASSIC” speaker “yet” at this time. If there was a newer version, it would have been designed by “George Scholz” not someone else. Don’t be fooled by a marketing name called (Sugar Cone) used in the past to market our “SCHOLZ CLASSIC”. We want to clarify that if you are looking at what is being marketed as a “new version” of this speaker, it is totally deceitful because what you’re getting is just another speaker, again being marketed with that name “Sugar Cone” speaker. The “SCHOLZ CLASSIC” made the name “Sugar Cone” famous, not the reverse. If you purchase a “SCHOLZ CLASSIC” you are getting the speaker you are looking for that has been sold for the past 11 years by us (with a perfect record of zero blown speakers). Anything else, you’re just paying for the marketing name. We owe it to our customers to explain this matter CLEARLY so you’re NOT fooled in the future by questionable ethics and marketing tactics. If you don’t see the GOLD “S” dust cap which stands for “SCHOLZ” (not Sugar Cone ) we had nothing to do with it. Please make a permanent note: As of 3/18/11 The “SCHOLZ” Sugar Cone speaker will be referred to as the “SCHOLZ CLASSIC” in past or present referrals. What we offer is the SCHOLZ CLASSIC SPEAKER in a 12″ 100 watt version. You have a choice of 8 or 16 ohm. Each driver is handbuilt here in the U.S. can be front or rear mounted. These drivers come stock with 68 oz. ferrit magnets, with through hole ventilation for faster cooling, 2″ voice coils, 11″ baffle hole , depth 5 1/4″ , 12″ overall diameter, approximate weight 11.5 lbs.. First and foremost the SCHOLZ CLASSIC SPEAKERS are a FULL range PROFESSIONAL GUITAR speaker which lets your sound deliver to places where it hasn’t gone before (providing your amp has the range to give). You need to know that these drivers were designed and voiced by (GEORGE SCHOLZ) a virtuoso lead guitarist and highest level design engineer, who spent 10 years developing what he wanted for himself and later passed them on to you. In developing the ‘SCHOLZ CLASSIC” it was an important factor not to use a voice coil any larger than 2″. The reason is because anything larger than a 2″ voice coil is primarily used for PA speakers and not really designed for enhancing an electric guitars full potential. Used as primary guitar speakers (PA speakers) will cause you to lose a full sound range that was designed specifically for electric guitars. The SCHOLZ CLASSIC was totally designed for electric guitar enhancement and nothing else.

The HJ Custom 100

The Harry Joyce 100 watt amplifier is a A-B class amplifier. These are all point to point, hand wired. Built right here in the U.S. by George Scholz.

It provides 4 inputs:
Normal Hi/Low

Brilliant Hi/Low

This amplifier is a master volume design which includes:

Gain controls for Normal or Brilliant inputs, Tone controls for Bass, Treble, Mids and Presence. The pre-amp stage uses 4 ECC83 (12AX7) Pre-amp tubes for inputs, tone, voltage amp, and driver. The output stage (output transformer) is designed for EL34 (6CA7) power tubes.

On the back side, voltage and ohm selector, 2 speaker outputs (in parallel) and an unbalanced slave output (signal is tapped directly off the output transformer). Hum balance, send and return (effect loop), as well as, fuse holders for power, high voltage supply and I.E.C. Power Entry Module.

Upgrades on newer units include:

-Stainless steel chassis (9 lbs)

-Enlarged filtering in power and bias supply
